Starting June 1, participants are encouraged to lose weight and then donate their larger-sized clothes which are no longer needed. Then they will receive generous discounts for new clothes at area retailers in reward.

2. Donate more than a thousand pair of jeans (500 dieters each donate 2 pairs of jeans to Goodwill).

3. Generate $50,000 of new sales at area retailers (500 dieters each spend $100 on new merchandise).

Former U.S. Military Combat Medic Heads Up New Job Placement Department at MERS/Goodwill

Maria Wilder, program director for MERS/Goodwill’s new Head Injury Services department, came to Goodwill through the trenches – literally. Wilder spent five and a half years in the U.S. Army where she cultivated her knowledge and passion for helping soldiers with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), and now she is helping civilians with the same condition find jobs through MERS/Goodwill’s new program.
With a deployment to Iraq in 2006 and another in Germany from 2003 to 2005,as well as an internship at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, Wilder said that because of the nature of her job as a combat medic, she became well accustomed to TBI and other cases of head injuries.
In lockstep with the mission of MERS/Goodwill (the mission behind the network of retail stores and donation centers) Wilder is committed to helping members of the community get back to work. And with the addition of the Head Injury Services department in the MERS/Goodwill job placement program, those who have sustained a life-altering Traumatic Brain Injury have a new opportunity to reenter th...

Business Booming at West County Goodwill stores

Posted Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Carrying a framed drawing of sailboats, shopper Curtis Cooper of Chesterfield walked to the checkout cashier at the Chesterfield valley MERS/Goodwill Industries store on a recent Saturday morning.

"They have good deals here; this picture is only $3," said Cooper, who comes to the store from time to time to look for old pictures. "And they have unusual things that you can't find other places."

Jeffrey Street of Oakville, manager of the six-year-old store on Edison Avenue, isn't surprised at the comment. People shouldn't be surprised there's a Goodwill store among the chic shopping destinations in Chesterfield valley, he said.

"We average more than 200 customers a day on Fridays through Sundays here," said Street, who said the same number of donations come in daily to this second-largest area Goodwill sto...

GO GREEN WITH GOODWILL

Every Day is Earth Day When Shopping or Donating to Goodwill, Which Makes for a Very Convenient Truth.

It has been a big year for thinking “green”.  Al Gore received an Academy Award for his internationally renowned wake-up call about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and this month the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the federal government to re-examine its policies on carbon dioxide emissions from cars.  As Earth Day approaches on April 22, we too will soon be taking stock of our lives and trying to figure out what we can be doing to live a more “green” lifestyle.  There is one simple answer to that question; shop more and donate more to Goodwill.

Improving our individual environmental track record with Goodwill takes only two easy steps.

The first step is to donate to Goodwill.  Every year, Goodwil...
