How Does Your Donation to Goodwill Make a Difference?

When you make a donation at Goodwill, you are doing more than just cleaning out your closet.

Donating to Goodwill funds job training, resume training, and career counseling among other services to help people get back on their feet.

Deciding to Donate

After doing some spring cleaning or simply downsizing your home, you may realize that you have a lot more stuff than you thought.

Clothes that don’t fit or that you don’t wear anymore take up too much room in your closet, and you want to get rid of them. Electronics that you no longer want or toys that your children have out grown can positively impact someone else’s life.

Don’t throw out your gently used possessions! Donate your items so that they can help other people in your community.

The Donating Process

Donating to Goodwill is a very simple process. Once you’ve decided that you want to donate and help other people in your area, you simply box up the items you wish to donate and take them to the nearest Goodwill. Make sure that the items that you bring to Goodwill are new or gently used, have all the pieces and parts, and still work.

After you have brought them to the store, you can drop them off with a donation attendant who will help sort your items. Then, the donation attendant will give you a receipt for your donations that you can claim on your tax deductions. For more information on your donation value, download our donation valuation guide.

How Your Donation Helps

With every donation, Goodwill  carries out and funds community programs and charities. These programs help people in your area find jobs and support themselves. Veterans, single parents, people trying to re-enter the workforce after an injury, and people who have been unemployed receive help from various programs that Goodwill creates.

In 2014 alone, more than 318,000 people earned jobs because of the programs made possible by donations from people like you. There are many other ways that donating makes a difference as well! Donating to Goodwill helps keep consumer goods out of landfills, which benefits the earth.
